PRODUCT DETAILS

The exact origins of coffee are not known, but the earliest reference to coffee is believed to have originated from Ethiopia in the 9th century where a shepherd was said to have noticed his goats getting too animated to sleep after eating berries from a tree. By the 15th century, coffee was being cultivated in Yemen; and by the 16th century the Ottoman empire brought it from the Arabian Peninsula to the Near East.

A lot of coffee drinkers in the Muslim world were drawn to it as a substitute for alcohol which was not allowed, so much so that it became known as the “wine of Arabia”.

When it reached Europe in the 16th century, people saw it as the “bitter invention of Satan” and asked pope Clement VIII to intervene in banning it. The pope, having tasted and liked it, chose instead to give it papal permission. The origin of the word coffee is either in reference to the area in Ethiopia where it was reported to have been first found (Kaffa), or as a transformation of the Arabic word “quwwa” meaning strong in reference to its energizing quality; or “qaha” meaning lack of hunger in reference to it being an appetite suppressant. This noteworthy drink has become over the years a symbol for hospitality, friendship, gatherings as well as a flourishing industry.

To the Arabs, though, it remains a first gesture of peace.
