Lena Okamoto is an artist dedicated to preserving and reimagining Japan’s textile heritage. Each creation is a unique, unrepeatable piece, crafted from authentic antique kimonos and obi fabrics, carefully curated for their historical and artistic value.

This particular work features fabric sourced from three distinct obi sashes, each exceeding 100 years in age. These rare textiles, once part of Japan’s rich tradition of kimono culture, were stored for decades in a vintage chest of drawers — whose wood has now been reclaimed and transformed into the artwork’s frame. The result is a true fusion of artifact and art, where every material carries its history and provenance.

The composition reflects the delicate balance between preservation and transformation. Inspired by kintsugi — the ancient Japanese technique of repairing pottery with gold — the artwork features golden lines that symbolize the beauty of imperfection and the strength found in restoration. Interwoven with the traditional pine motif, a revered symbol of longevity and resilience, the piece invites the collector to own not just an artwork, but a living fragment of cultural memory.
