Falling is usually associated with movement, speed, and change, yet here that motion has been arrested and preserved. The cascading folds appear to descend across the surface, carrying a sense of gravity and inevitability. What interests me is the idea that even the most fleeting movement leaves a trace. The work captures a moment that would normally disappear and gives it permanence. This work grew from an ongoing fascination with the way fabric responds to natural forces. A piece of cloth is highly sensitive—it records gravity, tension, pressure, and movement in ways that often resemble natural landscapes.

Looking at eroded cliffs, flowing water, cloud formations, and geological strata, I became interested in how similar patterns emerge across very different scales of nature. Rather than depicting those forms directly, I wanted to create a work that evokes them through abstraction. The piece combines sculptural and painterly processes. Fabric is manipulated, stretched, folded, and fixed onto the surface, transforming a traditionally flat support into a relief. A monochromatic white finish unifies the composition and shifts attention away from color toward texture, light, and shadow. As the light changes throughout the day, the work subtly changes with it, creating a constantly evolving visual experience. I hope viewers first notice the movement embedded in the folds, but then discover the stillness surrounding them. The empty space is as important as the textured surface. It offers a place for reflection and invites viewers to slow down and become aware of subtle shifts in form and light. The work is intentionally open-ended; some may see landscapes, others waves, drapery, memory, or emotion. This piece represents my interest in finding beauty in restraint. It reflects a personal attraction to quiet moments, subtle gestures, and forms that reveal themselves gradually rather than immediately. For me, the work is about preserving something fragile and temporary—an instant of movement transformed into something enduring.

Yulia Verigina is a Moscow born, Dubai based visual artist who masterfully blends her expertise in photography and speed painting into evocative figurative art.
