Dervish Oil Painting

The Mevlevis are also known as the "Whirling Dervishes" due to their famous practice of whirling as a form of Dhikir ( remembrance of God ). Dervish is a common term for an initiate of the Sufi path. Whirling is part of the formal sema ceremony And the participants are properly known as Semazens. Sufism is a mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through the direct personal experience of God. It consists of a variety of mystical paths that are designed to ascertain the nature of humanity and of God and to facilitate the experience of the presence of divine love and wisdom in the world. Dervish is a member of a Muslim specifically Sufi religious order who has taken vows of poverty and austerity. Dervishes first appeared in the 12th century; they were noted for their wild or ecstatic rituals and were known as dancing, whirling, or howling dervishes according to the practice of their order. Their focus is on the universal values of love and service, deserting the illusions of ego to reach God. In most Sufi orders, a dervish is known to practice dhikr through physical exertions or religious practices to attain the ecstatic trance to reach God. Their most common practice is Sama, which is associated with the 13th-century mystic Rumi. While whirling, the dervish’s arms are open with his right hand directed to the sky, representing his readiness to receive God’s beneficence. The dervish’s left hand is turning toward the earth, representing his willingness to convey God’s spiritual gift to those witnessing the Sema. In folklore, dervishes are often credited with the ability to perform miracles and described with supernatural powers. This painting is done in Oils with a textured background. It shows The Dervish in a state of Trance. Hence I have named the Painting "Trance".
