What are alcohol inks?
Alcohol ink is a fascinating and relatively new medium that is rapidly gaining traction in the art world. Alcohol inks, as the name implies, are alcohol-based inks that work beautifully on hard non-porous surfaces such as ceramics, waterproof paper, leather, polymer clay, stone, plastic, metal and more! They are vibrant, fast drying and waterproof.
How do alcohol inks work?
Alcohol inks behave similarly to watercolors. You can apply them directly to your chosen surface using a paintbrush. However, you can also adjust the way in which your alcohol inks flow by using a blending solution, also known as blender. Blender is an alcohol-based solution that you can use to help move your inks across the paper. One technique is to first apply blender to the page and then add drops of alcohol ink on top. The ink will bloom beautifully across the page, creating a lovely soft aesthetic. Alternatively, you can first add your ink to the page and then add drops of blender on the areas that you would like to see spread out across the paper. Indeed, the possibilities are endless when it comes to working with alcohol inks!
One of the most popular and fun techniques used by alcohol ink artists is the hairdryer technique. After applying your ink to the page, you can use the air stream from a hairdryer to push the ink around the paper. The paint will move differently depending on what direction you are pointing the hairdryer. This technique will allow you to create a beautiful wispy effect – as though the ink has gently danced across the paper until it slowly fades away. You can also play around with the settings on your hairdryer, as the results will vary depending on the temperature and strength of the air. There are also other tools that allow you to use air to move alcohol inks around paper, including heat guns, canned air, straws and more. Each of these tools produces a different type of air stream and hence will produce different results.
The Beauty of Alcohol Ink
What’s great about alcohol ink artwork is that it allows you to embrace the beauty of uncertainty. Unlike acrylic paints that tend to stay put exactly where you placed them, alcohol inks flow and move to their own rhythm. Of course, you can control and manipulate this movement, but only to a certain extent. You have to learn to work with the uncertainty and embrace the free-flowing nature of alcohol inks.
