Oil Painting
Love is not passive — it is a force. It moves through us, between us, and beyond us with an energy that transcends language, culture, and geography. The title Forces of Love reflects the belief that love is one of the most powerful and universal energies in human existence — elemental, dynamic, and irrepressible. Like gravity or wind, it shapes everything it touches, often invisibly, always profoundly. This painting is an attempt to give that invisible force a visible form. Inspiration: This work was born from a fascination with the universality of love — how every culture names it, honours it, and struggles with it, yet no single language owns it. The painting features the Chinese character 愛 (love) rendered boldly against a field of deep blue, alongside Arabic calligraphy — a deliberate choice to honour love as a shared human inheritance rather than the possession of any one tradition. The inspiration also draws from sacred architecture: the composition echoes the fractured luminosity of stained-glass windows, where light itself becomes a metaphor for divine and human connection. I wanted to capture that feeling of standing in a great space where colour and light seem to speak directly to the soul. Technique: The painting employs a bold structural framework of intersecting black and white linear bands that divide the canvas into geometric segments — angular, radiating, full of tension. Within these compartments, the brushwork shifts dramatically: long, sweeping gestural strokes in cerulean and ultramarine blue give way to explosive, flame-like passages of hot magenta and pink, while warm gold and amber tones introduce moments of tenderness and warmth. The calligraphic characters are rendered in thick white impasto, standing proud of the surface, demanding attention. Throughout the lower portions of the canvas, ghostly figurative forms — wispy, dancing, intertwining human shapes — emerge from quick, calligraphic flicks of white paint. The layering of thick impasto against thinner, more fluid washes creates a tactile depth that rewards close viewing. I want the viewer to feel the painting before they read it. The explosive energy of the magenta flames, the calm depth of the blue fields, the warmth of the gold — these are the emotional registers of love: passion, peace, tenderness. Then, as the eye settles, the viewer discovers the calligraphic symbols, the ethereal figures reaching toward one another, the architecture holding it all together.
I want people to recognise that love speaks every language, and that its force — whether quiet or consuming — is the thread that connects all of us across every border we have drawn. This artwork is deeply personal because it represents a truth I carry with me: that love, in all its forms, is the closest thing to a universal language I have ever encountered. The act of painting it — of choosing symbols from traditions not entirely my own and weaving them together on a single canvas — was itself an act of faith in connection. Every brushstroke in this work was laid down with intention and emotion. The ethereal figures dancing through the composition are the people I love, the ones who have shaped me, rendered not as portraits but as energy — because that is how love lives in memory.
Reem H. Sultan is an Abu Dhabi based contemporary painter whose richly textured abstract works explore the fluid intersections of femininity, inner strength, and organic movement. Through a masterfully layered use of oils, acrylics, and resin, she translates the complexities of human emotion into evocative compositions that invite deep introspection while balancing a unique sense of power and calm.
