Pichwai Indian Art
Pichwai (pichvai) is a style of painting that originated over 400 years ago, in the town of Nathdwara near Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. The word Pichwai has its roots in the Sanskrit pich (behind) and wai (hanging). A traditional art form that emerged in the 17th Century at the Nathdwara temple in Rajasthan, Pichwais are intricate paintings dedicated to Shrinathji and are typically hung behind the idol of the deity in local shrines. The entire border is done with lotus and holy cow motifs which are an integral part of pichwai paintings. The colors are also chosen accordingly to the pichwai theme. The center piece of the painting depicts the hands of lord Krishna holding his favorite flute. The maha Mantra is written with 3-D gold liner and the lords hands and flute are made with oil pastels.
