Abstract Acrylic Painting
The artwork "The Phonograph in the Time of War” depicts a stylized, cubist‑inspired scene of a seated figure, in an interior setting that includes an old gramophone playing a record and a large abstracted chessboard on the wall. The title links the intimate, nostalgic act of listening to music on a phonograph with the broader context of war, suggesting that even in times of conflict, personal moments of reflection and culture persist, offering a contrast between public turmoil and private experience.
The inspiration comes from exploring how everyday life and artistic rituals (music, games, reading) continue amid external chaos and conflict, highlighting the resilience of human expression and the need for solace during war‑torn periods. The painting employs bold, geometric forms and vibrant, contrasting colors typical of modernist cubism. Shapes are simplified and layered, creating overlapping planes that fragment the scene yet unify the composition.
The artist uses strong outlines and flat color patches to give the work a graphic, expressive quality. The viewer is invited to perceive the duality of war’s external devastation and the internal, personal refuge found in art and music. The scene encourages contemplation of how cultural rituals (the phonograph, chess) provide continuity and meaning even in hardship. The work is personal because it captures the emotional tension between societal upheaval and individual artistic perseverance, reflecting the artist’s own experience of seeking beauty and meaning during turbulent times.
The Phonograph during war lets you step away: Removing oneself from a high-conflict situation for 10-15 minutes allows the brain to cool down. An "emotional war" is an invisible, internal battle against stress, anxiety, and negative emotions, or an interpersonal conflict driven by unsatisfied needs. It involves a struggle for emotional regulation (the tug-of-war between logic and feeling), often exacerbated by societal pressure to feel happy. Effective coping includes mindfulness, labeling feelings, and stepping away from conflict.
