Between Stillness and Flight

With this artwork, I bring to you my premier piece of Chinese brush painting. This traditional art form, originating in the East, is a calligraphic technique, rooted deeply in economy of stroke and expressive control, where each line must be intentional and alive. This technique relies on variations in pressure, speed, and ink or water colour pigment load to create form, texture, and movement in a single and final gesture. I try to work mindfully to create this flow, allowing my brush to translate my inner rhythm directly onto the surface, which in this case, is a rice paper board. This, of course, makes the entire process very meditative and calming for me.

With this circular composition, I have tried to capture a moment of suspended grace- a vibrant parrot mid-flight, poised between delicate white blossoms against a warm, luminous gold ground. My inspiration for the circular format for this artwork was the traditional medallion paintings, which were often associated with prosperity and auspicious beginnings.
