Crafting Acrylic Painting
This is an acrylic painting using the technique of blocked in and glazing before the additional details are added on to the subjects. This painting depicts a scene of a traditional Emirati woman hand crafting traditional dresses using simple tools and techniques for intricate embroidery. The clothes reflects the rich cultural roots of UAE while combining modern style with grace and modesty. In this painting, the artist paints an elderly Emirati women in her traditional attire of shayla (headscarf) and a colorful Jalabiya gown.
She veils her face with a traditional battoulah which is usually worn by married or elder women. The artist paints several pillows wrapped in colorful embroidery threads and an array display of ready to be used seasonal fabrics of cotton, wool or silk to create the Emirati thawb (gowns). The distinctive embroidery design, beadworks and embellishments on traditional Jalabiyas holds symbolic meaning of tribal identity, marital status, or personal stories. To add an infusion of the nomadic Bedouin lifestyle, the artist paints the walls and floor in earthly shades of naples yellow, yellow ochre and burnt umber. Thick, woven rugs are painted on the upper walls that are usually adorn in a typical Emirati house interiors. The weaving skills are passed down by elderly women in families, ensuring the culture and roots are preserved through generations.
