Maokong Photography Prints
This photograph captures a fleeting yet timeless moment in Maokong, Taiwan, where spring’s soft cherry blossoms frame a traditional temple pavilion's ornate, time-honored rooftops. The layered perspective, created by a shallow depth of field, brings the viewer into a quiet space between observer and subject. The blurred pink blossoms in the foreground suggest impermanence, while the sharply focused temple roof behind them evokes cultural endurance. Together, they form a visual poem about memory, tradition, and the gentle passing of seasons.
The thought behind it was to explore the idea of duality: the ephemeral and the eternal, softness and strength, nature and structure. Cherry blossoms are notoriously short-lived—just a few days of peak bloom—and this impermanence has been a theme in East Asian art and philosophy for centuries. Against that, the temple stands resilient, crafted in stone, tile, and time. I saw this juxtaposition and knew I had to frame it not directly, but intimately, almost as though the viewer is hiding in the flowers, quietly watching history bloom again. The use of selective focus wasn’t just technical; it was emotional. I wanted to convey how memory works—how some things in life stay vivid while others fade. This is not a photo of a temple, nor a tree. It’s a photograph of a moment between those things.
Inspiration: This piece was heavily inspired by the visual language of Japanese mono no aware, the bittersweet awareness of the transience of beauty. I’ve long admired the works of photographers like Nobuyoshi Araki, who pair beauty with vulnerability, and nature with a personal point of view. In terms of framing and softness, I was also influenced by Impressionist painters, mainly how they used foliage or light as veils through which we view their subjects. Nature plays a crucial role in much of my work, but I’m particularly drawn to moments where human creativity and the natural world don’t clash—they complement each other. That’s what Maokong gave me: a peaceful co-existence between the craftsmanship of temple roofs and the delicacy of spring. What I Want the Viewer to Feel: I hope the viewer feels a quiet emotional pull, as though they’re remembering something they’ve never actually seen.
This image is meant to evoke reflection, nostalgia, and tenderness. I want it to feel like walking into a memory, or perhaps a dream, where beauty reveals itself slowly through layers. For some, this may recall a trip to Taiwan or a spring festival in East Asia. For others, it may stir a longing for simplicity, tradition, and the gentle cadence of nature. I want them to pause—not just to look, but to feel this fleeting scene's stillness and softness.
Medium and Process This photograph was taken using a DSLR paired with a medium-telephoto lens, allowing me to tightly compress the scene and control the focal plane. Shooting wide open at a low aperture (f/2.8) created the creamy bokeh in the foreground, deliberately framing the temple with living softness. I edited the image to enhance color separation: the blush of the cherry blossoms, the tiled roof's rich saffron, and the distant hills' deep greens. The post-processing emphasized clarity in the center of the frame while leaving the edges to blur and drift, mimicking how memory and time distort our vision of beauty.
The final piece is available as a fine art Giclée print on archival cotton rag paper, with a slightly textured surface to subtly echo the organic softness of the petals. The Subject at the heart of this piece is a temple roof—its golden dragons, intricate edges, and symbolic elegance. But in a more profound sense, the real subject is the cherry blossom—the lens through which the world is viewed. In East Asian culture, cherry blossoms represent not just beauty, but also fragility and the cyclical nature of life. The hills of Maokong, known for their tea plantations and spiritual tranquility, serve as a natural canvas on which this story unfolds.
The photograph becomes more than a depiction; it becomes a meditation. My Style My style thrives on emotion embedded in landscape and architecture, especially moments that feel quiet yet emotionally loaded. I often use natural elements like branches, leaves, or mist to frame my subject in a way that introduces intimacy and atmosphere. My post-processing is subtle but intentional: I chase color harmony and tonal balance, not perfection. In this piece, I lean into softness as a storytelling device. I treat the camera not as a documentarian’s tool, but as a painter’s brush—drawing attention with blur, guiding the eye gently, and letting the scene whisper rather than shout.
