Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be captivated by something or someone? An art form, a performer, an orator, or something alike? The rare ability of being able to mesmerize an audience feels too good to be true but you must experience it to believe it. Dance as an art form is one such activity that can hold one’s attention and there are several forms doing exactly that. Personally, I find dance forms enacting a story to be the ones capturing your attention to the fullest. And there are several such dance forms all over the world, and one of which originates from the southern region of India and is known as Kathakali, literally translates to “story play”. The art form is distinguished by the elaborately colorful make-up, costumes, and face masks. Traditionally it is the male dancer to perform this form and revolves around themes related to folk mythologies, religious legends, and spiritual ideas. Of late, the performances also involve western stories such as those by Shakespeare. Irrespective of the story, the act is rarely uninteresting as the characters on stage portray a never-seen-before appearance and body language which can enthrall any audience and a lot of it is expressed by the artist through his eyes, often understood to be the gateway to one’s soul. This artwork is my perception of a truly mystical Kathakali performer capturing your unhindered attention through his ever expressive eyes.
