Celebration of Life

Sonal Johar

The Warlis or Varlis are an indigenous tribe or Adivasis, living in mountainous as well as coastal areas of Maharashtra-Gujarat border of India and surrounding areas. They have their own animistic beliefs, life, customs and traditions. Festivals and dances are common scenes depicted in the ritual paintings of Warli. One of the central aspects depicted in many Warli paintings is the tarpa dance. The tarpa, a trumpet-like instrument, is played in turns by different village men. Men and women entwine their hands and move in a circle around the tarpa player. The background is done in Lippan art from Kutch region of Gujarat to make the celebration more pompous and grand.
