This painting is part of an art challenge that I started, to promote awareness to the issue of Children's Right to Play - as stated in the United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child UNCRC, adopted in 1989. The right to play is the 31st article which states that it is the right for every child to "rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts".
The challenge is for artists to depict a child from their country at play - with the hope that an art exchange like this one will raise awareness to the many children around the world who are not able to play because of financial, political, health, or safety reasons. In my painting, Dana from the UAE plays on a wooden swing like those that were attached to an almond tree in the central courtyard of traditional Emirati houses. The name Dana is a common Emirati name meaning "pearl" and referring to the traditional pearling industry that thrived in the area before the advent of modernism and technology.
“Play is not a break from learning. It is endless, delightful, deep, engaging, practical learning. It’s the doorway into the child’s heart!” - Vince Gowmon
