This creation attempts to celebrate womanhood and feminism; signifying the French revolution era during the 20th century and beyond. It was a mix of feelings really when I was creating this piece – a touch of enchantment, mystery, pride, contentment, and grace – yet with a captivating vibe of melancholy; as if a window directly into the heart, the key, and lock serving the same purpose exactly. The key and lock are actually resin art pieces that were pure white, but to make these look like a perfect fit into the whole scheme, I used antique wax paste along with hints of pure and rich gold wax paste to replicate the look of old, rusty and vintage locks and chains – almost as if they were precious relics jumping out of the revered era. The subtly blended colors trailing along with hints of sepia serve as a perfect encapsulation of the era in context.
Talking about the process in stages, I use decoupage as my base for my art pieces, and then to make them 100% waterproof I embellish with Acrylic paints, wax paste finally coating with thick waterproof varnish layers - subsequently making them potential heirlooms. I enjoyed the varnishing stage while creating this one the most, as it was almost as if I were preserving a ‘moment’ in its most raw and untainted form.
