Resin is a beautiful medium through which one can create a variety of stunning 3D sculptures, decorations, jewellery, trays, coasters, paintings, trinkets and much more. Read on to find out more about the magical world of resin art!
What is Resin Art?
Resin or epoxy resin is a liquid chemical that can be combined with a variety of additives such as colored pigments, glitters, pressed flowers, gold flakes and other decorative elements to create stunning works of art. The additives are what help breathe life, color and patterns into the otherwise uniform and clear resin.
Typically, the liquid resin is first poured into a mold or onto a surface which will determine the shape of the final artwork. Once the resin is poured into the mold, you must gently heat it using a flame torch to get rid of any air bubbles that may ruin the appearance of the finished piece.
Once the additives have been combined with the resin liquid and the desired appearance is achieved, the runny resin can be completely hardened so that it turns into a solid usable object. This is achieved by adding in another liquid chemical known as hardener. The ratio of how much resin vs how much hardener needs to be used depends on the type and brand of resin being used. If the ratio isn’t correct, the object may not harden properly. Indeed, the process of resin art must be approached carefully since it is very difficult to correct mistakes once the resin is hardened.
Why should I try resin art?
What’s amazing about resin art is that it is incredibly versatile and allows you to create a variety of art pieces that can also serve as functional items in your day-to-day life.
Additionally, you can use resin not only to create new pieces but to dress up existing items! For instance, you can spruce up existing ceramic pots or holders you have by layering resin on top of them - thus breathing new life into an old piece! Indeed, the possibilities are endless with resin as you can use so many different items as additives, all the way from pressed flowers to beads to fabrics and more!
Resin Safety
It is vital to protect yourself when working with resin as direct resin exposure can cause health issues. You must wear gloves and a respirator while working with resin to protect yourself.
Thanks to the internet, you can find a variety of completely free resin art tutorials on websites like YouTube. There are tutorials geared towards complete beginners as well as those who are already at intermediate or advanced levels. So you can teach yourself some basic resin art techniques by watching instructional videos. However, be sure to work in a ventilated space and wear protective gear to protect yourself from the resin fumes.
