Horse Painting
The horse has been a subject in art since the cave paintings of prehistoric man and has remained so until the present day.
Over the years, the role of the horse in the picture, the style, technique and function of the picture have altered dramatically. These changes can be traced in the work of three artists: George Stubbs, John Frederick Herring Snr. and Sir Alfred Munnings who were the few English horse painters to receive professional recognition.
Horses symbolize royalty because of their diligence and gallant beauty. Inspired by many beautiful artworks, this time I tried something new and creative. My work “warrior” is a mixed media on hard board. I have used plaster of Paris and clay to enhance the depth of my work.
The definition of a “warrior” is someone who is brave and experienced as a soldier or fighter. A warrior is someone who battles with whatever situation they happen to be in. The horses that I painted were totally different from the ones that I had conceptualized previously. I was totally absorbed in imagining a new reality, distinct and independent from the previous one. It was a kind of anti-establishment thought, where the old must give in to the new. And the horse became one of its metaphors. It was as though, to have the horse as the subject matter of my paintings, would mark the self-consciousness that lay within me. It was as if Reality burst forth through the fantasy, only to give rise to a different and new fantasy and dream. This was the decade when my ideas went through a series of changes, which were reflected profusely in my paintings. “It also emblematized the very concept of speed.”
The horse, always hardworking, could have signified the struggling self of the artist as well.
