A whirling dervish receiving light and spreading his aura around him. Subtle hues of blooming flowers on one side representing life and the letter "wao" on the other side represent the relationship between the divine realm and the human world. Dervish is a common term for the initiation of the Sufi path. Whirling is part of the formal sema ceremony And the participants are properly known as Semazens. Sufism is a mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through the direct personal experience of God. Raising their arms, holding their right palm upward toward heaven and their left palm downward toward earth, they gradually start whirling in a counterclockwise direction. According to Sufism, each letter of the Arabic alphabet is assigned a relationship between the divine realm and the human world, and the letter ‘Waw’, which is equal to number six, refers to al-‘aql bil-idafah (intellect in relation to what is below it).
