Rhumba is one of the ballroom dances which occur in social dance. The basic rhythm of the Rumba is quick-quick-slow with distinctive side-to-side hip movements. Rumba developed in the black urban slums of Cuba in the mid-19th century. It was originated in the Eastern Cuban province of Oriente. "The son” is a vocal-instrumental which is used for this dance form. The dance is influenced by African and Spanish roots. Hip movements are exaggerated, which you can see in the painting too highlighted in the bold black lines. Inspired by Alfred Gockel's Rhumba in red, this artwork shows the deep rich colors in the abstract. A combination of brush strokes and palette knife creates the layers of shades so the figures in black accents come to life.
“My inner goddess has her sequins on and is warming up to dance the rumba.”- E. L. James
